Smile Makeover Q & A

WHAT IS A SMILE MAKEOVER?

In a smile makeover, Dr. Dodson will consult with you about exactly what you’d like to accomplish and what you’d like your smile to become. From there, they will recommend a procedure or a group of procedures to help you achieve your goal.

Some procedures often combined in a smile makeover include:

- Porcelain veneers

- Porcelain Crowns

- Teeth whitening

- Gum recontouring

- Invisible Braces

Any of these procedures alone can accomplish major changes in your smile. When two or three are combined, the results are that much more dramatic.

WHAT CAN A SMILE MAKEOVER ACCOMPLISH?

A smile makeover can correct a number of imperfections in your smile, including:

- Chipped or cracked teeth

- Misalignment

- Mild to severe discoloration

- An Overly “gummy” smile

- Spaces between teeth

WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING MY CONSULTATION?

As with any cosmetic dentistry procedure, the initial consultation is a very important step. During your consultation, you can explain exactly what you’d like your results to be. We also can show completed cases of our patients who have received smile makeovers to allow you to see the changes possible. Dr. Dodson can then recommend the approach and specific procedures most likely to accomplish your desired results. Be sure to ask questions about anything that you’re unsure about, and also be sure to give detailed information about your goals. This will go a long way toward ensuring your long-term satisfaction with your smile makeover.

A smile makeover is the process of improving the appearance of the smile through one or more cosmetic dentistry procedures, such as;

Dental veneers: These are like a topping on your tooth similar to a fake fingernail.  They can really change your smile when planned properly.

Composite bonding: This is light cured toping or reshaping of your tooth to be aesthetically pleasing.

Tooth implants; These have 3 parts: the bone held portion, the connector to the bone held part, and the tooth-shaped portion atop the two other parts.

Teeth whitening: this can be done in the office, or at home. At home takes longer and depends on your doing the whitening.

Some of the components taken into consideration include your facial appearance, skin tone, hair color, teeth (color, width, length, shape and tooth display), gum tissue and lips. Smile makeovers are performed for many reasons and customized according to your unique considerations.

What is it that you like or dislike about your smile or your teeth?

Some aspects of your smile that your cosmetic dentist will review with you and that could be improved include the following:

Tooth Color: Silver or amalgam dental fillings can be replaced with natural, tooth-colored composite restorations, while teeth whitening can improve the color of stained or dulled teeth. Tooth color and shading are important considerations during the evaluation of and preparation for various procedures, including porcelain veneers, crowns, bridges, composite bonding and dental implants.

When considering the color of your teeth, keep in mind that dark or discolored teeth may suggest an aged mouth. A well-shaped smile comprised of bright, white teeth lends to a youthful appearance. The shade your dentist selects for teeth whitening and veneers is carefully evaluated with special consideration given to the tone and color of your face and hair. Cosmetic dentists are skilled at finding the right balance between providing you with a brighter, whiter smile and maintaining a natural tooth color.

Alignment and Spacing: Teeth that are crooked, overlapping or have gaps between them can be straightened and aligned when necessary through orthodontics (Full metal braces) or Invisible braces, which are see-through tight-fitting shells that move your teeth over time, and can be improved with veneers.

Missing Teeth: One or more missing teeth can negatively affect the appearance of your smile – as well as affect your bite and increase your risk for tooth decay and gum disease – making replacement an integral part of oral health and facial esthetics. Missing teeth can be replaced by dental implants, bridges or removable partial dentures.

Here's wishing you a Smile you love and want to use often. May your Spring Holiday be special and meaningful.
